Why Quality Paint Matters: Sherwin Williams vs Budget Brands

Why Quality Paint Matters: Sherwin Williams vs Budget Brands

When homeowners ask me about paint, one of the first questions is usually about cost. I get it - a gallon of Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore can cost two or three times what you'd pay for a budget brand at the big box store. But after 20 years of painting homes across San Antonio and the Hill Country, I can tell you that the cheap stuff almost always costs more in the long run.

Coverage Makes the Difference

Premium paints have higher pigment concentrations, which means better coverage. With quality paint, you're often looking at one or two coats for full coverage. Budget paints frequently need three or even four coats to hide the old color - and that means more labor, more time, and more paint. When you factor in the extra materials and work, that "cheap" paint isn't so cheap anymore.

Built for Texas Weather

Our San Antonio summers are brutal on exterior paint. Temperatures regularly climb past 100 degrees, and the UV exposure is intense year-round. Premium paints from Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore are formulated with better binders and UV-resistant pigments. They flex with temperature changes instead of cracking, and they hold their color instead of fading to a chalky mess after a few years.

The Durability Factor

A quality exterior paint job with premium materials should last 10-15 years with proper prep work. Budget paint? You might be looking at repainting in 3-5 years. Do the math on two or three paint jobs versus one, and the premium paint is the clear winner.

Our Recommendation

At House of Hues, we exclusively use Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore products. Not because they're the most expensive options - but because they're the best value when you consider the complete picture. Your home deserves paint that looks great and lasts, and we won't compromise on that.
